It all depends on what you mean by "smart." Obama and his wife are school book smart Ivy League graduates with no real-world experience. That makes them part of the intelligentsia, the group that undermine the foundations of a society that has been built by ordinary practical people. Today's schools and colleges are manned by such people, and their students are indoctrinated into mostly absurd and harmful ideas, as they themselves were.

The intelligentsias, having no useful skills, and trained only in the abstract "soft-sciences," generally drift toward utopian leftist agendas. Unless they find ways to advise others what to do they are unemployable. That is why they love bureaucratic central planning--it gives them a job at the top. Young vibrant societies have no intellectuals (Emerson was our first, 250 years after the first settlors arrived.) Unfortunately, mature societies accumulate this burdensome elite and have a difficult time maintaining momentum under the weight of their bad ideas.

And, let's admit it, their bad ideas have to be presented in a deceptive manner, or no one would listen to them. But their intentions are so noble, and their weaknesses so disguised, that many voters do overlook their implausibility.
