This book is well-researched and very detailed in supporting the underlying thesis that the New Deal didn’t save America, but most likely prolonged the agony associated with the Great Depression. It was, in fact, World War 2 that drove the economic engine that dragged the United States back to prosperity. And, even worse, the leftovers of that thinking and the influence over the day-to-day lives of Americans lives on. Witness the drive to take over health care in this country under the guise of government providing us all with the benefits we need.

Shlaes writes well, but the prose can’t help but sound like college reading material in it’s detail. There is no alternative, though, as the meme of the New Deal being our salvation is so ingrained in American society that only detailed, factual evidence could convince people otherwise.

Consider me convinced. An excellent book and great reading in light of the next wave of socialism attempting to move through our country.
