This is a good approach of the emerging church movement and some of the problems it presents from a classical Christian point of view. Carson very carefully lays out the beliefs and points of some of the prominent leaders of this movement and then discusses the pros and cons.
Generally, the cons are pretty condemning. The downside of the theology used by some of the emerging church types is that it’s heretical. It doesn’t describe the same Jesus the Bible does.
My only complaint with the book was that it was a little more technical than I was prepared for. By the end, it was reading like a textbook. That said, Carson was thorough and compelling in his arguments and suggestions both for the classical Christian and the emerging church Christian.
I’d recommend this if you need to get deep into the theological problems and want to understand how the emerging church presents ideas that would undercut classical Christianity.
