Before reading this book, I had only a vague understanding (and general unease) about the emerging church movement and all of its flavors. This is a great introduction to those in the demographic targeted by this movement to understand what they are offering and (in my opinion) what they are getting wrong.
The authors make a great case for the fact that this movement, at best, is downplaying some important parts of the Christian life and orthodoxy and, at worst, aren’t actually leading people to salvation. The last chapter compares the straw man evangelical church that the emergents criticize and the emergent churches themselves with the seven churches in Revelation. A great reminder that while the evangelical churches may not be perfect, it doesn’t do anyone any good to go to the opposite extreme.
I also appreciated the effort put in to comparing this “new” movement with previous movements to liberalize Christianity in the past. The fact is that it may have new names and cooler music, but this is nothing new and we should not be fooled.
A great introduction that has encouraged me to read more and be further prepared to defend my faith against false teachings and stumbling blocks that may be introduced with this movement.
