I was only vaguely aware of the details and fallout of the Six Day War in 1967 before I picked up this book. I now feel like there’s no more I need to know about the facts. Oren does an amazing job of giving you the perfect third person view into the entire ordeal. The reader knows what every major player is thinking and what they know. Oren’s analysis of the reasons and logic seem very appropriate and informed. My one minor quibble has to do with my own inability to process the fire hose of details from the author. I had moments where the names and places ran together and started to lose meaning. Fortunately, the story kept bringing me back.
This is a book that anyone even mildly interested in the Middle East peace process should read. I’m amazed at how racist and genocidal the Arab nations were at this time. I realize now that many of the anti-Israeli groups now have only changed their terminology, not their ideology.
This is a riveting and fascinating look into a short, but very influential war in the recent past. I highly recommend it.
